First mover advantage in consumer electronics is everything as can be seen by Apple's success over the last decade. Microsoft has been playing catchup in a lot of different areas. Unfortunately the Zune was on that list and it fell too far behind to salvage.

Gizmodo reports the Zune software will be the only part of the era which will continue to be used in Windows 7 phones.

There wasn't anything necesarily wrong with Microsoft Zune's, they just always released a step behind the competition.

I think Microsoft definitely learned a lot from the UI as Windows 8 appears to be using the slick appearance that once used to be seen on Zunes.
